IF THE LIGHT ESCAPES,

A BRAVING THE LIGHT NOVEL

By Brenda Marie Smith

A standalone sequel to IF DARKNESS TAKES US

A solar electromagnetic pulse fried the U.S. grid. Now northern lights are in Texas—3,000 miles farther south than where they belong. The universe won’t stop screwing with 18-year-old Keno Simms. All that’s left for him and his broken family is farming their Austin subdivision, trying to eke out a living on poor soil in the scorching heat.

Keno’s one solace is his love for Alma, who has her own secret sorrows. When he gets her pregnant, he vows to keep her alive no matter what. Yet armed marauders and nature itself collude against him, forcing him to make choices that rip at his conscience. IF THE LIGHT ESCAPES is post-apocalyptic science fiction set in a near-future reality, a coming-of-age story told in the voice of a heroic teen who’s forced into manhood too soon.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
 Excerpt:
FROM CHAPTER 5:
 “These northern lights bug the crap out of me,” I tell Alma. “What are they doing here? They’re supposed to be tied to magnetic poles. I saw this show a couple years ago that said the north pole was drifting north, not south. So how did they end up here? The poles can’t drift around randomly. That’s impossible.”
“I don’t know, baby. They worry me, too, but we need to be quiet.”
“They make me feel like something bad is gonna happen. What do you call that? Fore-something.”
“Foreboding?”
“That’s it. I’ll be quiet, now, and just stew in my foreboding.”
“Silly.” Alma reaches up and ruffles my hair.
When we patrol and we can’t cuddle on account of guns, Alma and I could talk all night. It’s not a good idea for us to talk much when we’re patrolling, though. We get all involved and forget to listen for anyone who might be sneaking around, hunting for food or water, or worse: getting ready to kill us for it.
We walk along with our rifles in the night. It’s cool out here, but not cold…
Alma stops and raises her gun.
 “Hear that?” she whispers.
“No, what?” I’ve got my gun up, too, and I’m pivoting around, searching. I want to hide Alma, but she would never let me.
“Over there.” She points at the corner by the park. And I hear a jangly noise, like car keys. No one drives cars now, though…
With one deft swipe of his sword he cut through the slime. It was thick and heavy like gel. The ooze coated his blade in a dull, sticky mess. Lucy fell away. She was dripping with the stuff. It weighed down her limbs and left her sticky and slow. The monster could see them now. She raised her gun to fire. The slime jammed it.
“Oh shit.” It was not the way a lady was supposed to talk, but Vincent appreciated it. It summed up the situation well. He had spent those seconds reloading his shotgun, and shaking his head against the illusions creeping at the edge of his vision. He fired. Once. Twice. Three times. The beast took the shots and rose to strike.  Its thick giant body bled and oozed, but they hadn’t even slowed it down. It bared its fangs.
Lucy screamed in fury and fear and grief. She snatched the torch from the altar and threw it with all her strength. It hit the snake full in the chest. Against its massive form it looked like a mere match. For a second nothing happened. Then flames exploded across it.
Vincent grabbed Lucy. He tackled her away from the slime trail. They hit the ground and he pinned himself protectively over her. The creature’s slime proved extremely flammable. It shrieked and writhed as every pore caught alight. The slime trail down the cave caught fire. Vincent kept Lucy down and covered. They hugged the ground, breathing shallowly as all the oxygen was sucked from the cave.
Twisted Tea Christmas
by Laura Childs
GENRE: Cozy Mystery
It’s the week before Christmas as tea maven Theodosia Browning and her tea sommelier, Drayton, cater a fancy Victorian Christmas party for Miss Drucilla Heyward, one of Charleston’s wealthy doyennes. But smack dab in the middle of the Fa-la-la’s, Miss Drucilla is murdered, her gold rings stolen off her fingers, and a genuine Renoir snatched off the wall.
The police come screaming in while Theodosia peers speculatively at the guests and wonders – whodunit? Urged on by Miss Drucilla’s personal assistant, Theodosia runs a shadow investigation on suspects that include wealthy neighbors, a handyman named Smokey, an unscrupulous art dealer, and the executive directors of two local charities who were in line for donations.
As Theodosia continually finds herself in hot water, she also hosts numerous holiday tea parties, stumbles upon a second dead body, and shelters a cadre of homeless dogs who come to her rescue in the surprise ending. This Tea Shop Mystery is written with pacing, plot twists, and action reminiscent of a thriller and is liberally sprinkled with the magic of Christmas.
Read an Excerpt:
“What’s got you so interested, fella?” Theodosia asked as she snuck up behind Earl Grey and grabbed his collar. She was so intent at clipping on her dog’s leash that she almost didn’t see the dirty hand sticking out of the soil.
When she finally did notice, her mouth turned dry and her brain bonked out a screechy warning that yelped: No. This can’t be happening!
But seeing is believing so Theodosia stole a second look, registered the waxy appendage with dirty curled fingers, and let out a strangled cry.
“Drayton!”
“What?” He was stumbling after his own dog, frustration in his voice.
“Get over here.”
Throwing up his hands, Drayton abandoned his chase, and picked his way toward her. “What’s wrong?”
Heart in her throat, Theodosia pointed to the solitary hand that sprouted from the dank earth like some kind of unholy mushroom.
“There’s a hand sticking out of the dirt.”
“What?” Now Drayton was mumbling to himself about muddying his loafers.
Theodosia stood her ground, though her nerves were firing like rockets, warning her to back off this amateur investigation that had suddenly taken a deadly turn.
“Wait a minute, did you say hand? Human hand?” Drayton honestly thought she was making a bad joke. Trying to frighten him.
“There’s a body buried here. A dead body!”
Reluctantly, Drayton took a step closer. He stared down, let out a loud gasp, and clapped a hand against his chest. “Mercy, I think I need a defibrillator!”
The sweet scent of cut pine swirled around them as they glided down the lane toward the edge of the woods and the fields beyond. The silence of the snow-filled woods around them was broken only by the muted clomp of hooves and the soft growl of compacting snow beneath the sled’s wide runners.
Having Clara next to him felt like old times. Over the years, the two of them had spent hours driving through the park in London and across the countryside. They’d chatted, discussed, argued—mostly, they’d just sat quietly, happy to let the comfortable silence stretch between them. Like this.
She’d let down her guard during the past few days and had started to emerge from the isolation she’d cast herself into since the accident. True, he’d forced her into it by having Mrs. Hansen and Eads distract Mrs. Bailey so that Clara would have to be more independent, and he’d ceaselessly encouraged the children to include her with everything they did, short of asking her help with their math work. He felt a pang of guilt at the deception. But he would do anything for her. For God’s sake, he’d nearly clicked up his heels when she’d gone into the library to select a book for herself.
A book! He’d felt less victorious when he’d been graduated from Oxford.
He could have cheered that he’d managed to convince her to come into the woods with him. No, not with him, he realized ruefully. With the children. But he’d gladly take his victories wherever he could find them.
“Do you remember the last time we gathered greenery together?” he asked in an attempt to make casual conversation.
She brushed back her fur-edged hood with her kid glove to look at him. “We did?”
“It was that holiday I spent with your family at Raleigh Hall when Anthony and I were still at Eton.” He slanted her a sideways glance. “Don’t you remember? You must have been about Margaret’s age. My parents and brother were in Ireland and couldn’t return until well after the new year, so Anthony insisted I spend the term holiday at Raleigh rather than stay on at Eton or be alone at Northbourne.”
Her expression softened at the memory, and he couldn’t mistake the happy glow in her eyes as she slid her hands into her fur muff and settled back on the wooden bench seat. “I remember that you spent the entire holiday pulling at my braids, hiding my dolls, and showing off by doing all kinds of tricks with horses and weapons. You even stole my Christmas pudding.”
He quirked a half grin. “Perhaps I was attempting to win your affection.”
“Or perhaps you were just being a fifteen year-old boy on leave from school for the holidays.”
Duly chastised, he muttered with feigned chagrin, “Well, when you put it like that…”
She laughed, and the soft sound drifted through the still woods around them like music.
“Did you enjoy yourself this afternoon?” he asked as casually as possible, yet he knew there would be a world of meaning in her answer.
“I did.” She grudgingly admitted, “It was nice to be out in the fresh air, in the woods and fields. I thought…”
When her voice trailed off, he prompted gently, “You thought what?”
With a self-deprecating smile, she shook her head. “It doesn’t matter if I enjoyed myself. The children had a grand time. That’s what matters.”
“They certainly did.” Not wanting to push her too much about being out of her room, he warned instead, “They’ll hold you to your promise, you know.”
“What promise?”
“Hot chocolate and gingerbread in the conservatory this evening.”
Her bright smile sparked a warmth deep inside his gut before she turned back to look over the heads of the ponies, who flicked their ears back and forth in an attempt to eavesdrop as they plodded out of the woods. “Chocolate and sweets… That’s the kind of promise I always like to keep.”
Unable to stop himself, he reached over slowly and took her hand. She stiffened with surprise when he lifted her hand to his mouth and placed a kiss to her knuckles. But she didn’t pull away, and emboldened, he gently took the fingertips of her glove between his teeth and slipped it off her hand. He let the cream-colored glove fall away onto his lap.
This time when he kissed her bare palm, a shiver raced through her that had nothing to do with the cold winter.
“Michael,” she whispered, so softly that his name was nearly lost beneath the muted sound of the sled runners beneath them.
He dared to take another kiss and let his lips linger against her warm, soft skin. He nearly groaned at the sweetness of her, of her familiar taste and scent that still haunted his dreams and even now made him ache with desire.
When her fingers curled slightly beneath the feel of his lips, he placed tender kisses to her fingertips. “There are other promises worth keeping, too.”
He closed his mouth around her finger, and she gasped. The sound pulsed through him and tightened his gut. So did the quickening of her breath when he lightly sucked.
They’d once done far more together than this, when she’d lain so scandalously with him on a picnic blanket that last summer when they were still together. With her legs bare beneath the skirt gathered at her thighs and her untamed hair lying around her shoulders, she’d been the most delicious temptation he’d ever experienced in his life. He’d summoned all his restraint not to take her innocence right there amid the wildflowers, instead finding his pleasure in bringing her to hers in all kinds of wanton ways. Yet now he trembled from these chaste kisses to her hand as much as he had that day from his kisses to her bare breasts and the quivering flesh between her thighs.
“What promises…would those be?” Her voice emerged as hoarse sighs between light pants.
He twirled his tongue seductively around her finger, then moved on to do the same to the next. One by one, slowly and decadently… “You promised you’d let me kiss you and touch you for the rest of our lives.” He drew a faint whimper from her lips when he licked at the sensitive flesh between her fingers. “You promised to marry me.”
She stilled. Confusion darkened her face, but so did the desire his lips and mouth were flaming inside her. “Some promises,” she murmured sadly, “shouldn’t be kept.”
Anna fell in love with historical romances—and all those dashing Regency heroes—while living in London, where she studied literature and theatre. She loves to travel, fly airplanes, and hike, and when she isn’t busy writing her next novel, she can usually be found in her garden, fussing over her roses. Interview & Giveaway - Intentional: How to Live, Love, Work and Play Meaningfully by David Amerland
Intentional: How to Live, Love, Work and Play Meaningfully
by David Amerland
GENRE: Non-fiction/smart book
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Live your life the way you want to. Manage stress better. Be more resilient and enjoy meaningful relationships and better health. We all want that. Such life leads to better choices, better jobs, loving romantic partners, more rewarding careers and decisions that are fully aligned with our aims.

What stops us from getting all that is the complexity of our brain and the complicated way in which the external world comes together. The misalignment between the internal states we experience and the external circumstances we encounter often leads to confusion, a lack of clarity in our thinking and actions that are not consistent with our professed values.

Intentional is a gameplan. It helps us connect the pieces of our mind to the pieces of our life. It shows us how to map what we feel to what has caused those feelings, understand what affects us and what effects it has on us and determine what we want, why we want it and what we need to do to get it.

When we know what to do, we know how to behave. When we know how to behave we know how to act. When we know how to act, we know how to live. Our actions, each day, become our lives. Drawn from the latest research from the fields of neuroscience, behavioral and social psychology and evolutionary anthropology, Intentional shows you how to add meaning to your actions and lead a meaningful, happier, more fulfilling life on your terms.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt:
From a conceptual perspective history is easy to read. The 19th century was all about industrialization. We harnessed machines to augment manual labor by many degrees of magnitude. The 20th century was about achieving efficiencies of scale so the machines that create our goods could run better and produce more at lower cost. The 21st century is about resilience as the production hubs and supply networks we have created are stress-tested to the limit.
The global pandemic that started in the closing months of 2019 acted as a catalyst that accelerated change everywhere. The additional environmental and psychological pressure it piled up became a scalpel that exposed all our weaknesses. The one attribute that would perhaps have allowed us all to weather the Covid-19 storm better, that would have allowed our systems of governance and systems of trade to weather it better: resilience, appeared to be missing from our arsenal. Interestingly, this is where values come in.
 There is a chain of causal attributes we need to work our way through now. For example, we can’t talk about values without tackling personality and we can’t tackle personality without discussing traits.
Traits, in turn, affect goals, motivation and behavior. We need to spell out the difference between personality and character, two qualities that are often used interchangeably, and we also must define the difference between traits and values which are also two qualities that are also misunderstood and are often used interchangeably.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Talking with David Amerland

What is your writing environment?

Pre-pandemic I used to travel round the globe and have visited, at last count over 20 countries on three continents. I am completely digital. My notes exist in the cloud. My office is where my laptop is. All my scheduling is done on my phone and all my books and research files are on my tablet or rather I sue my tablet to access them but they are in the cloud and I can access them from any device.

 My writing environment then depends on the day and the moment. I have written entire chapters on planes, airports and trains. I sometimes write at Starbucks when I travel, mainly because it is a familiar environment and allows me to switch off enough so I can write.

These days, however, I am most likely to be at home when I am writing. I have a summer house in Greece, within walking distance from the beach that has 360 views. Where I write there depends on the time of day, the temperature outside and the wind. I’ve found that I don’t need any particular environment the help me be creative, productive or focused. These are attributes I bring to the table as part of my work as a writer. So, all I need is a powerful laptop (I tend to have a gazillion tabs open on my browser all at the same time) and a fast internet connection and I can then do my thing.

What is your writing process?

Like most writers I have good days and bad days. On the good days everything I think of and write shines like a gem. The words come easily to me, the examples I think of are brilliant and I can synthesize complex research into everyday, conversational writing without ever trying. On bad days someone’s sneaked in during the night and severed the connection between the thoughts inside my head and the fingertips that make them manifest on screen. I’ve had days when after working hard for two-three hours and writing up to 3,000 words I just deleted them afterwards.

I have one rule: good day or bad day I will write. This is key when I am writing a book. The process of writing gets rid of all the bad writing that’s in my head. Once bad writing is out on the screen I then have space for good writing to work its way up from the depths of my brain.

Because I use writing as a means to explore my ideas I find that I never get writer’s block. There has never been an instance, in my entire life when I looked at the screen and my brain was blank. But there have been more than a few instances when something I wrote that I thought was ‘brilliant’ turns out to be, on subsequent reading, bilge. I find though that I can work to improve bad writing once it is already on the screen. So this is a process that works perfectly for me.

What authors have caught your interest lately and why?

I am currently going through a phase where I read a lot of fantasy and speculative fiction. Brandon Sanderson is an author whose books I love. I also read Ursula K. Le Guin which is amazing because her fiction continues to push the boundaries and she is an author I read when I was just a teen. I also like Robert Jordan and his Wheel of Time books. It’s important for me to read fiction and fantasy when I am writing non-fiction otherwise I subconsciously copy the voice of the writer of a non-fiction book and that means I lose my own.

What was your inspiration for this particular book?

How do we know how to behave? Where does the knowledge we think we possess on this come from? What makes some types of behavior acceptable and some others not in specific contexts? These are questions that are easy to ask and difficult to answer? Like most seemingly simple things they have a way of revealing a universe of underlying complexities the moment we begin to delve too deep. So, I delved deep. The fact that we don’t know the answer to these questions is to me the root of many of our modern problems. Our lack of faith in the institutions that serve us, our inability to create forms of governance that serve us better, societies that have fragmented and have low trust and a low sense of civic duty, these are all issues that are behavioral. In a person behavior is character but in a society (or a company) it is culture. Culture determines what happens because it establishes the norms that guide us. You can see now, I hope, how all these things are related and how unravelling them and understanding them better empowers us.

What is your favorite scene in your new release?

It is funny to think that non-fiction books have scenes. Yet they do. A scene is a specific montage of words that conjures an image in the reader’s mind and guides them to understand what is happening on the page, sufficiently, for them to suspend disbelief and become engaged in the make-believe world of fictional writing.

Non-fiction writing also involves scenes. Again we use words to conjure up images that, in this case, simplify complex issues and dense ideas and create a verisimilitude in the reader’s mind that helps them engage so that they can better understand what the book is about and how they can benefit from it.

In Intentional  I had to convey simply some of the neurochemical and neurobiological processes that govern our sense of grit, our motivation, our beliefs and our values. There are a lot of complex interactions that happen in the central nervous system that connects our body and brain and these turn sensations we receive from the outside world into signals we interpret inside ourselves. It took some time for me to work out how to best write the passages that bring all this complexity to life for the reader in a way that is easy to understand.

What are you working on now and when can we expect it to be available?

Like most experienced writers I now always work on two-three ideas at a time. This entails thinking about them – a lot. Doing the preliminary research, creating the skeleton outline, fleshing it out to maybe 5,000 – 6,000 words and then depending on which idea will gain priority because my agent things is more saleable building that up to a sales document that’s between 50,000 and 65,000 words long.

 It's my long-winded way of saying that I am, right now, at the “I don’t know” stage so whatever guess I make is likely to be wrong but what I can say by way of a small hint that will make total sense in retrospect is that whichever of my ideas goes forward my next book will be epic.

What do you like to do when you are not writing?

When I am not chasing the clock because I have to have a specific word count finished each day when I write, I try to talk to friends over coffee as much as possible, I spend time with my partner and our dogs, I exercise a lot more and I binge-watch Netflix series I had put on hold. Writers, are like everyone else when not working. Our job makes us exceptional at some things the same way elite athletes can do incredible things in their sport but off-court or off-track they are just like regular people.

What is one interesting fact about you that readers don’t know?

I am an introvert to the point that left to my own devices I’d quite happily disengage from the world, social media, talks, webinars and interviews and just let my work speak for me. Thankfully I am not that famous that I can do that because that is really bad for my mental health. So, I stay fully engaged and remind myself that all this work I do, the blogging, the articles, the videos and even the interviews are part of a process that demystifies a complex subject to my readers. It is this sense of service that actually keeps me grounded and working and, most probably, sane.

Top 3 things on your bucket list?

First, meditate every single day for a year. I use meditation in a haphazard way when I am tired or troubled so I can reset and recenter my inner resources. I need to start being more regular in how I meditate because I know we have neuroscientific evidence on its benefits and the way it helps us regulate our emotions.

Second, to bring my 100m sprint back down to under 12 seconds. I used to be able to sprint 100, in 11.43 seconds. That was fifteen years ago. I am now 57 and it’s just over 12 seconds so clearly I have a lot of work to do.

Third, write fiction again. I used to write literary fiction and literary short stories in the now distant past. I haven’t written fiction for over twenty years so in many ways I am starting afresh. It is my intention to bring those old skills back online.
